Numerous researchers announce the necessity to deal with European issues through the historical and contextual prospective, rather, that through the images of current problems and “imagined enemies”.
On the eve of the European Parliament elections, the feeling of a loss of meaning in the European Union is swaying opinions. Numerous istorians and citizens of Europe and elsewhere, note the disintegration of a project carried by a utopia which today touches its limits: teleological utopia which reraised the millennial history of Europe in the light of the European construction ; a providential utopia that committed Europe to an irreversible unity, in defiance of the countries that remained on the sidelines; utopia that finally made European construction an end of history. Today, after many other crises, Brexit forces Europe to recognize that the European project is no longer irreversible. It is even in grave danger.
With the withdrawal of the United States, in the shade of which the Europeans lived in quiet times, European continent faces new questions. Faced with emptiness, there are many attempts to erect a simplifying story that separates Europeans and others in a caricatural way. For a continent that, not so long ago, dominated the world, barricading itself in a fortress makes one smile, as if this domination had left no trace in many non-European peoples after centuries of commercial and military colonization. The extreme right now tries to identify the history of the continent with the authoritarian story of a Christian civilization, white and sure of its past, which would have to fight an alleged decline by exalting its founding “values”.
Assume the shadows as the lights of European history
European scientist vehemently condemn these obsidional readings, which are so gibernating the cultural, religious and political diversity that characterizes the continent as the responsibility inherited from European history in the world. They make the other – the Muslim, the Jew, the immigrant, the refugee, the Rome, but also Putin, Trump & Co – the scapegoat of European frustrations and helplessness. Similarly, scientists do not see well the responsibility of these stories protagonists’, that make the history of this or that country lead to a single sum of suffering, wars and genocides, nor the reason for a unilaterally accusing stance, which identifies Europeans to executioners. Their urgency today: to get out of this morbid dilemma, and for that, to assume in front of the world the shadows like the lights of the European history. What is necessary today – is to think of Europe through the lens of the real historical responsibility and to make people to refer to a historical context, rather than to the ideas of “imaginary enemies”.
Brexit – a utopia, that provokes lots of questions
As it is known, there is no fixed tool to exit the European Union, which causes many difficulties to the process itself. The Brexit puts in doubts the whole unity of the EU as of the monolith organism, that took leading part in the world during centuries. Postponed till October 31, the Brexit gives to the United Kingdom an opportunity to participate in European elections. Virtual nightmare, the European elections now announced for Thursday, May 23 appear as a very serious probability, to the point of setting a new political horizon. They are the result of London’s request for a new Brexit carryover. Meanwhile, the anti-Brexit opposition is dreaming of turning the ballot into a kind of pro-European referendum, supporters of a tough Brexit are waiting for a new debacle for Theresa May and an opportunity to dismiss her and launch an assault on her.
