All things you have to know about best day tours of Lisbon Portugal: attractions, price and duration
Lisbon is not only the most charming capital city in Europe, but it represents one of the most significant places of our continent.
Lisbon enjoys a very important strategic position overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, therefore it has been the major communication of Western Europe with all world’s shipping routes.
The origins of the Portuguese capital city date back to 300,000 years ago. A legend says that it was funded by Ulysses – hence the name Ulissipo, that means “enchanting port”.
After several negative historical events, the city became to shine again during the Age of great exploration, when Vasco da Gama left the fortification that is now called Belem Tower for sailing to India.
This moment initiated the so called Portuguese Golden Century, i.e. a hundred years featured by richness and unparalleled trade leading to Lisbon’s urban growth: the Monasteiro dos Jeronimos and the large Praça do Comércio are only a few examples of that.
Portugal became one of the biggest colonial empire of 16th century and Lisbon was, indeed, the most important commercial city around the world.
Unfortunately, in 1755 the city was struck by a terrible earthquake and a subsequent tsunami which caused a very large fire destroying the whole city in three days, except the district of Alfama that was not involved in that tragic disaster.
At that time, citizens did not lose their heart and as soon as aftershocks were less intense and frequent, they started to build up the new Lisbon city.
Being aware of the previous tragedy, new architects designed the new city in the Northern area, known as Baixa Pombalina (from the name of Pombal Marquis who financed the works), and new important streets – Avenidas Novas – have been created.
The ordeal of the city was not over yet. In fact, Lisbon had to face Napoleon’s invasion threads which lead the royal family to escape. In order to prevent the whole country, even the capital city was officially moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Going around Lisbon, you will surely remark a big statue similar to the Cristo Redentor in Rio, although there is no link between them. The Cristo Rei in Lisbon, even if smaller, overlooks the Tago river and offers a very nice view on the city and the famous “Ponte 25 de Abril” Bridge.
Later on, Lisbon underwent a modern restauration and this is the main reason why we can find a pretty combination of historic elements and more contemporary corners.
